  July 24, 2016 - Medium garnet with some bricking. This wine seemed to be changing for the entire four hours that it was opened. It seemed to show something a little different every time I went back to it, which made it quite an interesting wine. Initially, it had an old Rioja nose of leather, earth, wood, but with little fruit. After some time in the glass, the cherries and currants started to come out. Subsequently, the flavors seemed to ebb and flow, finally ending with slight bretty and astringent notes. Light to medium bodied, smooth tannins, low to medium acid, and a medium finish. It would be interesting to try another bottle of this sometime.

  De color cereza rojizo de capa media-alta, tapado, oscuro. Reflejos anaranjados y grandinos, sin mucho brillo. Borde amplio, anaranjado con gran constraste respecto al menisco.
  
  Algo falto de intensidad al abrir la botella, despistado, impreciso, sin mucha expresión. Inicialmente se aprecian suaves tostados, cremosos y apuntes de barrica avainillada sobre un fondo especiado. La sensación es de falta de profundidad y detalles, de estar apagado. Parece que haya envejecido prematuramente. Va creciendo sin prisas dando notas de frutos rojos en licor, cuero viejo, cacao en polvo, regaliz Zara y una cada vez más presente nota térrea a humus, hojarasca y maderas envinadas. De menos a más.
  
  Todavía muy vigoroso en boca, concentrado, hasta duro. Los taninos firmes y presentes, marcados, acompañando a una incisiva acidez que parece no haberse limado en estos años en botella. Sobresale una curiosa nota apimentonada que recuerda a la cabernet junto a mucha fruta negra y tostados elegantes. Necesitará guarda pero ya se disfruta. De los vinos de Riscal de finales de los 90 parece ser el que presenta mejores maneras y con un aparente mayor potencial de crecimiento en botella. Veremos...

  70% tempranillo, 20% otras, 10% graciano - 13% vol.
  Selección de uva con una edad superior a los 30 años proveniente de viñedos propios y de pequeños productores de la Rioja Alavesa. Fermentación en depósitos de acero inoxidable a temperatura controlada. Sometido a 36 meses de crianza en barricas nuevas de roble americano de 225 litros. Un mínimo de 36 meses de guarda en botellero en los calados de la bodega antes de ser comercializado.

  January 21, 2012 - Good old Rioja. Definitely past its prime, but enjoyable for what it is. Barnyard on the nose, black fruit on the palate followed by a touch of vanilla oak, light bodied, medium finish. as it opens up with air, a little more acid and fruit waking up, but this is still a dusty old rioja at this stage.

  Plenty of vanilla on the nose, a background of forest fruits. Perhaps a hint of scented hand soap? Still very youthfull looking.
  
  On the palate it evoked memories of of Ch. MacCarthy St Estephe. Which is no bad thing.
  
  Contrary to the drinking window, I think you might just squeeze at least further half decade out of this.
