Community Tasting Notes 4

September 30, 2017 - Dinner at Summer Pavilion (Summer Pavilion, Ritz Carlton, Singapore): Decent enough at its age, but this was not great - it paled significantly next to a 1978 Rioja Gran Reserva that we had alongside. The nose showed a touch of funk alongside other teritary aromas of winter melon, soy sauce, and earthy, truffley mushroom notes, all this with just a touch of red fruit and preserved plum smells along side. The preserved plums were picked up again in the palate, along with a fresher note of red cherries and a twist of orange peel. It was still quite fresh, but the structure somehow felt a bit soft and muggy with the tannins having completely gone, with the finish tailing off somewhat. All in all, a decent enough drink - simple but charming at its age, but not great. Should have been drank up a few years ago maybe.

April 12, 2014 - A Saturday Night in KW (Dave's House): Pours a very nice, light, fully transparent shade of ruby with lots of orange and bricking toward the rim. Nose is quite mature of decaying leaves, sweat/saline, soil and brown spice. A little past prime, but still enjoyable. Palate is fully integrated with no discernible tannin and fierce acid. Finish is medium-. Nice wine but not head turning. Drink 5 years ago.

April 12, 2014 - Saturday Night in KW (Dave's House): Popped and poured, fully saturated cork. Ruby red in the glass with a moderate brick. On the nose, dried red cherries, baking spice, undergrowth, earth, soy, grass clippings, fish sauce, decaying leaves and a touch of anise. Intriguing nose, that leans almost entirely tertiary, but still appealing. On the palate, this falters a bit, medium plus acid that seems to be taking over, with tastes of dried red fruit, earth, soy and tea leaves. Finish is a touch clipped, leaving it rather short. More of a pleasure to smell than to actually consume. Drink 10 years ago.
