May 13, 2013 - Classic sangiovese, with sour cherries, well-oiled leather, maybe a touch of mossy forest. At this point the wine is showing young, but perfectly drinkable. Delightfully silky on the tongue, and in many ways reminiscent of Caprili's Brunellos. The only point at which it's clear that this is something less than its big brothers is in the finish, which, though pleasant, is thin and underwhelming compared to the Brunellos. This is a great value and a fine way to enjoy well-made sangiovese from a terrific maker on nights when you can't bring yourself to open a Brunello. Almost too good, and it's almost too tempting to properly follow it up...

March 12, 2013 - Wonderful stuff; the best Caprili Rosso since the 2005. Needs about 20 minutes of air to really sing, where it shows beautiful aromas of gravel dust, tar, clay, and graphite covering graceful, lean dusty cranberry and raspberry. This is everything I seek in a Rosso di Montalcino, though it is on the lighter end of the spectrum and needs some big sniffs. The palate is also lean and vibrant, showing high tones of lightly dusty strawberry, which are actually quite juicy, mild sweet tannins are present but they are very light and integrated already. The finish isn't quite as seamless, showing some expected youthful angles, but with additional air this too resolves a bit with more air. After the air the finish is more like an earthy strawberry hard candy; really delicious. This wine is very graceful and linear throughout. Whereas previous vintages I've said would be better with 10 years of age, I'm not so sure with this one; perhaps, but the tannins are so seamless and the wine so integrated, I think this has an ideal window under 8 years or so. Shows very favorably for the 2010 Brunellos.
