Community Tasting Notes 6

April 14, 2021 - Waning days of the pandemic (let us hope!). As before, this is a big ass wine. Big fruit, big wood, about as subtle as an atom bomb. While not my style, it is hard to deny it provides pleasure. Drinking this solo on a cool evening, but really this needs a grilled velociraptor.

July 13, 2020 - First of a mixed 1/2 case of Trapiche single vineyard malbecs bought in the old days from PC 7-8 years ago (back when they used to actually sell wine they owned). As expected, this is a meal of a wine. Inky, rich, extracted. A tsunami of a wine, this is not for anyone looking for something subtle or polished. While I opened this looking for something different to have with spicy Thai food, this is clearly made for a big hunk of meat on the grill. While this is not at all my style, there is no denying it has its place.

February 6, 2015 - Brooding violet appearance. Boasts deep scents of blackberries, plums, graphite, licorice, and Sichuan peppercorn. The palate is firm and taut, showing outstanding fruit purity, supple textures, and a sneaky complexity that is braced by cardamom spice and a streak of acidity. Finishes with clarity and persistence. Decant or lay down.

January 4, 2014 - Deep purple, nose of earth, oak and blackcurrent, big full bodied wine, black cherries dominate the taste, long finish. Drinking well now, but could cellar a few more years.

August 8, 2013 - I tried the '08 of this Vina Frederico alongside another '08 single vineyard Malbec from Trapiche - the Frederico Villafane. I found both to be pretty similar really. This had perhaps slightly less concentration, intensity and depth than the other, but was also more soft and supple. Like many Malbecs, I found these to be a bit firm for my taste.
