January 22, 2023 - The 1991 Maya is fully mature with sweet plum fruit, bell pepper and toasted spices. Good freshness to the ripe fruit. Tannins largely resolved and melded to the fruit. Seems like it’s at the tail end of its peak window.

December 10, 2021 - Over the hill, hugely big and rich but falling apart. Stinky. Dying. Stewed prunes. Structure not there. Is this what happens to an over extracted Cali cab when it does not have enough structure? Basically undrinkable.

January 29, 2020 - A puzzling bottle, not like any other 90s Mayas I've enjoyed, but ultimately a satisfying one. Upon being opened, the wine evidenced tremendous VA, and when a splash decant did not good whatsoever I nearly gave up. Eventually, some additional aromas appeared: caramel, vanilla, sweet incense -- sort of a Café Crème all in all. The wine was still not correct, but showed very well with food. Notes of black fruit and licorice. I'm not sure how to account for this lack of typicity. I have a 1990 Maya deep in the cellar, so will report back eventually on how that one compares.

December 6, 2019 - Still has years to keep drinking! Wow

January 26, 2019 - I love Maya. However I have had a growing concern that some of these rich fruit bombs in California don't age as well as some predict. We drank this along with a 2007 Maya and some other gems (a 1995 La Tache was corked, a 2002 Bryant Family was amazing, a 1996 Beringer Cab was also terrific). The 2007 Maya was a GORGEOUS wine. The 1991 was nothing but raisins and prunes. It tasted more like an overripe zinfandel than the beautiful wine that it is. Perhaps it was a bad bottle, although it wasn't corked or oxidized and had no off flavors. It had just become flabby in the extreme. Maybe it's my palate; perhaps others enjoy this state of the wine more than me. But it's rare -- in fact basically unheard of -- that I can't finish a glass of Maya, and I didn't get through this one. The 2007, on the other hand, is drinking beautifully right now. So for my money, somewhere between 10 years and 25 years this wine starts to change in character in a fairly pronounced way, and some will like it while others may not.
