May 20, 2023 - Opened at Caprice in HK for the Four Hands Dinner. Slow-oxed very gently for 1.5 hours before sharing with friends.
This was perplexing for me. I expect La Tache to be powerful, and have explosive stemmy aromatics to be wafting up from the glass. This bottle didn't quite have it, and the nose needed to be coaxed out a little more in the glass. The classic DRC notes came around with some air - but it felt a bit restrained.
However, this was fantastic on the palate - incredible balance between fruit, Vosne spice, minerality and acidity - and had a finish that just went on for days. Prime stuff.
Judging by other notes here it seems like this bottle is somewhat inconsistent - it certainly was a much more powerful experience last time I had it (2018), and maybe the extra 5 years made a difference. I hesitate to call this particular bottle tired, as the palate was definitely on point, but the nose really was just a bit subdued. Alas, a good La Tâche, not a great one - onto the next one!2 people found this helpful Comment -

11/1/2005 (link)(Romanée-Conti La Tâche) The deepest colour yet - looks quite old though with its mahogany colour and browning rim. The nose is a little gamey and still shows some mushroom - but this time much more subtle - together with high tones and jammy red fruit. Beautiful texture and weight in the mouth. This is the first wine with such volume. There is again a crescendo effect as you savour the wine, the finish being of bitter chocolate coated red fruits. Still a rasp to the tannins and lovely acidity. Very classy.
