March 23, 2024 - 7th of 30, opened an hour then decanted 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, little changed from previous notes, still on the nicely vibrant fruit with fab HB/Graves flavours, long and complex as ever, breed and balance, but sense of mid palate dilution, some upside, 20+ years. VF (18.5).

December 24, 2023 - Spectacular! Opened ~8 hours and then decanted immediately before pouring into the glass. The wine was great from the first sip. From previous reviews it seems that earlier in its evolution the wine was not so great. Patience has been rewarded for those who have waited. It is great now and will be for many years to come.

August 1, 2023 - the merlot was not perfect during the 2002 harvest
so this is not a 100 point wine
but it is terrific with french earth and fruit in evolution
    For Ethan's birthday at Manitou

July 8, 2023 - From a bottle purchased upon release and cellared under ideal conditions, this wine was double-decanted off of its heavy sediment, allowing one hour in carafe prior to funneling back into the cleansed bottle. It was later served at a two-hour dinner, where it improved over the first hour. A blend of 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc, it is deep garnet in color and flaunts a beautiful bouquet of cassis, black cherries, violets, pencil shavings, leather, cigar tobacco and sage. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic (13.5%) and with well-integrated oak, it delivers flavors congruent with the aromas, adding notes of nutmeg and loamy earth. The tannins are plentiful but fairly fine-grained, lending structure but not compromising drinkability at this stage. Solid in the middle and long on the finish, this is what should be expected from a first-growth in a difficult vintage...severe selection of fruit and no compromises in winemaking. Bravo! Drink now-2037.

Rockss and Fruit

(Chateau Haut Brion) I have always loved this wine. My first time since barrel. Really reminds me of the '96 with maybe a shade less finesse. Smokey nose with burnt grass, hay, touch of oak, scorched earth, iodine and somewhat backwards but deep nose. Fruit comes out after a while on the nose. The palate is complex and elegant with some big tannin. The wine though never shows its heaviness. Concentrated with red fruits and great purity and a long finish with some oak tannin and mineral. Persistent. Lovely wine. An ager for sure.
