April 14, 2024 - "Pairs with Sadness" (Chicago, IL): #13-12, 9% abv. Showing more mature than I would have liked for a riesling of only 13 years. Peachy, and dark in colour, showing lots of the candied peaches and other ripe fruits of the vintage. There's definitely some acidic balance, but it's relatively subdued and hidden by all the sweet, ripe fruit. Almost a slight hint of browning and roastedness here. Have to wonder if the #13 just isn't as good as the #26.

January 15, 2024 - Light golden. Bright honeycrisp apples and slate. So fine and mouth filling in the middle with a completely clean finish. Just what I like in these (and why it pairs with a marsala sauce so well). Great now and still will be great for 5-10 years. I doubt I can resist that long though.

December 10, 2023 - As noted by ACYSO below, this starts out a bit muddled and unrefined at cellar temp but actually seems to gain structure after a decant at cooler temperatures. Sweet, hedonistically tropical in the manner of Donnhoff, and a good match with Szechuan food tonight.

October 22, 2023 - Dinners at Tiny Pine Bistro; 10/21/2023-10/22/2023 (Carbondale, CO): #26-12, 9% abv. Go figure -- a different AP number than I had previously. I didn't actually know that Dönnhoff even did that. Anyway, this was kind of flabby and sweet initially, and not particularly interesting, and it took a few hours of air and chill to tighten up the wine and make it tighten up and show more acidity and mineral core. Not a great iteration of this wine, but a pretty solid one all the same.

September 15, 2023 - Golden yellow in color. Beautiful aromas of ripe yellow peaches, oranges/nectarines, herbs, honeysuckle and yellow florals. Palate follows through with sweet honey poached yellow orchard pit fruits, decent acidity to carry the high residual sugar and a long fruity finish.

(Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese) ($60.00) It’s both the giggling daughter of Felsenberg yet also the older poet-sister of Kirschheck. Here its minty face is really digital and explicit, and the wine is as clearly great as it can ever be, rippling with pent-up energy, electric with minty brilliance, yet pliant with its cool smooth texture. +++
