May 20, 2012 - Orangey and old. Has oldness but good acidity. Lemony and grippy

May 18, 2012 - Judgment of Singapore: Part 1 - Chardonnay and Syrah (Zeffir, Dunlop Street): I was one of the two outliers with this bottle. The rest of the group was not too thrilled by it (it was overall #7 out of 8 Chardonnays), but I actually loved it. It was just a bit past its prime maybe, but I still found this rather better than the last bottle we had a month back. It had an absolutely beautiful nose, almost liquered, with apple schnapps, ciderish scents, and umami-ish mushrooms (ceps I thought) and chicken essence aromas floating out alongside golden honeyed notes and dried stone fruit smells. All very lovely and seemingly very old. The palate was very developed too, with notes of preserved limes and figs, toffee, nougat and caramel, tarte tartin almost, and then tertiary touches of mushrooms and earth, lemons and red apples - wonderful complexity all held in pitch perfect balance by some melting acidity. The finish was starting to flag ever so slightly, but still had a lovely honeyed glow to it and a soupcon of spice as the wine pettered out. Beautiful stuff, obviously not as strong as some of the other favoured wines in the pack, but with tons of charm to make up for it. I was very taken by this - I actually thought it was a nice Burgundy village from the 1970s or early 80s.

April 9, 2012 - Deep baked lemons and vanilla bean creme. Lovely plush extravagant lemony yellow ripe grapefruits attack on the initial followed by golden apples and golden kumquats. Dripping with golden goodness. Good acidity

April 7, 2012 - Vanilla, oak, and a citrusy nose. Ripe yellow fruit, mature pineapples, peach and apricots. Mellow fruitiness, still showing high acidity, but definitely rather aged.

April 7, 2012 - My Birthday Celebration (Kingyo, Marina Square): A nice surprise. This was a bit puzzling at first, but most of the table eventually guessed it was a new world Chard, most probably Aussie, and mos probably from the mid-1990s. It had a really golden yellow colour, something you would only expect from a Burgundy at least a decade or two older. The nose started out really funky as well. In fact, it smelt a bit Epoisse at first, before the initial layer of funk blew of a little to reveal deep aromas of earth and sous bois, honey and beeswax, some caramel notes and just the lingering remnants of pineapple, kumquat and almonds scents. Complex, deep and very tertiary. It seemed really aged on that nose. Nice though. The palate was far more youthful and was actually still pretty enjoyable. It was creamily textured, almost oily in fact in a way that hinted at the warmer origins of the wine. However, there was tons of acidity as well, with really fresh, lemony notes underscoring an open-knit mouthful of honey, beeswax and slightly pineappley fruit. The tertiary notes picked up on the nose showed up again as the wine moved into an earthy finish with bit of menthol and some kumquat peel notes. The palate was admittedly a bit simpler than the nose, and a bit too bright on the acidity without food to tame it, but it was still a real pleasure. A quirky wine, but very good.
