August 5, 2020 - The 1996 Pichon Lalande is really beginning to drink with style, wafting from the glass with an inviting nose of blackberries, cassis, cherries, rich soil tones, cuban cigar and subtle hints of mint and bergamot. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with an expansive, sumptuous core of fruit underpinned by ripe acids and powdery and refined but still virile tannins. Long, penetrating and sapid, this unusually Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated vintage was tightly wound for its first two decades, but as time passes it's the château signature that's dominating the cépagement.

July 25, 2020 - Popped, poured, consumed over three evenings. I still really like this vintage of Pichon Lalande, but it seems to be in a new phase where the cigar box notes have become a little dominant, drowning out some of the other notes that made it more complex. At the end of the third night, however, other notes seemed to be coming forward and integrating, so I'm hopeful that this will age well and transition back to the kind of complexity it had previously.

July 18, 2020 - Decanted for one hour before serving. This was served to me in blind. Cassis, dark current, green pepper and herbs on the nose. Well integrated palate that was soft with sweetness. Very enjoyable yet I felt the wine was older given how resolved it was. Drinking well now.

July 13, 2020 - Stunning showing tonight from a superb bottle, this has almost a perfect aged Bordeaux nose of sweet tobacco and nutty gravel. Quite powerful on the palate with great balance and intensity and delicious flavors of black currants, tobacco and smoky gravel. Sleek and refined with a very concentrated finish which sports crisp tannins and complex notes of roasted nuts and dark spices. Fabulous but well-stored bottles should continue to improve for years as the rather strong tannins continue to soften. 95+

July 12, 2020 - From 375ml. Always a pleasure having aged Bordeaux, and my first time trying this super-second. The first vintage where PLL moved away from a majority Merlot blend, but the Merlot signature is still very much present with its round suppleness and tarry chocolatey notes. Very good lift and concentration. It definitely met expectations, but is it worth the price? I am not so sure.

(Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Pauillac, Bordeaux) Sadly, this is not the kind of wine I get to drink every day, but it’s a reminder of just how great the 1996 vintage was in Bordeaux. The Pichon-Lalande has an unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), with the remainder made up of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Despite the lower-than-usual proportion of Merlot, it’s a classic wine from this consistently excellent Pauillac second growth. Just starting to drink beautifully now, the wine is beginning to reveal its cedary complexity of aromas. The palate is silky-smooth, with excellent concentration, complexity, and balance and a linear acidity that flows through to the fresh, fine finish. Fabulous now, but there’s no hurry to drink this up. Hot Picks

(Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) Deep garnet red color; herbal nose of tobacco and white pepper; restrained but tasty palate of cassis, leather and tart plum; medium-plus finish 93+ pts. (14% Petit Verdot in '96) (This was the most open on the palate as I've ever experienced this wine, having tried several bottles in years past; I think it is finally emerging from its shut-down, heavily tannic period. Gildas is very proud of this wine, thinks it is one of their best, with the potential to go 50 years or more.)

(Chateau Pichon-Lalande Pauillac) A fine concentration of colour here, right out to the rim. A very fine nose. The fine, pure Cabernet fruit that makes this such a great vintage for the left bank is still showing a little primary character, but less so now, with more secondary elements coming through. It is still pure, though, and vigorous with some smoky, iron and cedar notes. Slightly aloof at first on the palate, showing a lot of structure through the midpalate, although it does flesh out. A touch creamy, with grip aplenty. This is very stylish, and brimming with great promise. Right now it can be appreciated for this, but it will be an immensely greater wine in ten years time.
