November 18, 2019 - Stunning, sexy nose of leather, dry meat, cedar, graphite, paper, rockdust and well-defined red fruit & cherries with a hint of vanilla. Pure, tantalizing, universal pheromones.

On the palate fresh acidity with glossy cherry aromas contrasted by a carpet of dry, solid oak that leads into a well-balanced, evolving finish. This is great, clean, drinkable stuff, the aromas are well-rendered and just of the right intensity.

As for my personal taste I am not sure whether the fresh acidic fruit pairs well with the dry, dusty wood in this one. I have tasted Calon Segur performing better (purer) on the Kirsch and Haut Bailly on the heavy oak. Then again its practically impossible to stop drinking this once in the decanter…

November 16, 2019 - Same OWC we pulled last bottle from in 2016. Cork in mint condition. Wine seems to be in a dumb or "semi-dumb" phase. Closed. Few hours decanting made little if any difference to nose. Good news. On palate, no sign of aging. Same dense fruits as in previous tasting. Tannins still noticeable. Too early to show tertiary notes.

November 3, 2019 - I worried a few months ago that this had closed down, but this bottle was absolutely in its prime drinking window, diplaying secondary and tertiary notes. Generally left bank wines from the vintage seem to be hitting their stride, and this is very approachable with just an hour or two in the decanter. It is very much old school mature Paulliac. The nose is is full of blackcurrant, blackcurrant, plum, cigar box, and old leather. The palate is multi layered and complex with sweetened tannin, while still retaining a bite, and is perfectly balanced. The finish is 30+ seconds, but perhaps still over tannic; maybe another year or two will address this. With regards to longevity I am beginning to suspect that contrary to initial expectations, the vintage as a whole will need to be consumed over the next decade to enjoy it at its best.

October 13, 2019 - Showing a bit of brick on the edge. Ruby core.
Pure focus aromas of cassis, tobacco, dried earth, mushroom, leather, and a touch of green spice.
Medium weight on the palate with a good hit of tannin and bright acidity. Incredible length and just a lovely brightness to this wine.
Looking forward to this opening up. I’d hold for another 3-5 years and drink over the next 15.

October 13, 2019 - Beautiful; balanced; long nose; sophisticated palate, mature fruit; feminine nuisance.

(Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Pauillac, Bordeaux) Sadly, this is not the kind of wine I get to drink every day, but it’s a reminder of just how great the 1996 vintage was in Bordeaux. The Pichon-Lalande has an unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), with the remainder made up of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Despite the lower-than-usual proportion of Merlot, it’s a classic wine from this consistently excellent Pauillac second growth. Just starting to drink beautifully now, the wine is beginning to reveal its cedary complexity of aromas. The palate is silky-smooth, with excellent concentration, complexity, and balance and a linear acidity that flows through to the fresh, fine finish. Fabulous now, but there’s no hurry to drink this up. Hot Picks

(Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) Deep garnet red color; herbal nose of tobacco and white pepper; restrained but tasty palate of cassis, leather and tart plum; medium-plus finish 93+ pts. (14% Petit Verdot in '96) (This was the most open on the palate as I've ever experienced this wine, having tried several bottles in years past; I think it is finally emerging from its shut-down, heavily tannic period. Gildas is very proud of this wine, thinks it is one of their best, with the potential to go 50 years or more.)

(Chateau Pichon-Lalande Pauillac) A fine concentration of colour here, right out to the rim. A very fine nose. The fine, pure Cabernet fruit that makes this such a great vintage for the left bank is still showing a little primary character, but less so now, with more secondary elements coming through. It is still pure, though, and vigorous with some smoky, iron and cedar notes. Slightly aloof at first on the palate, showing a lot of structure through the midpalate, although it does flesh out. A touch creamy, with grip aplenty. This is very stylish, and brimming with great promise. Right now it can be appreciated for this, but it will be an immensely greater wine in ten years time.
