Community Tasting Notes 1

March 28, 2010 - Day later from memory. Decanted for 4 hours in advance. Color as deep and impenetrable as the previous wine (the sublime Poggio di Sotto Il Decennale) was light. Intense, smoky and black fruit aromas laced with Montefalco funk. A giant mouthful of wine, yet not ponderous or heavy. We were forewarned that the tannins would be overpowering, but I didn't find that to be the case. Certainly they were a force to be reckoned with, but this might be the most tannic grape on the planet and you have to be ready any time you encounter it. Rich layers of fruit tumbled across the palate and left an impression of muscular depth and rustic intensity. 10-15 years of life ahead of it easily. This property is completely overshadowed by Caprai, Bea and a few other better known producers of sagrantino, and it's one of those cases where I can gladly say, "good, that means there's more for me."
