January 7, 2024 - Popped and poured; enjoyed over a three hour period. The 2010 Chianti Classico pours a deep ruby with a near opaque core; medium(+?) viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, developing and initially, slightly austere but an hour of air did wonders. Funky Montmorency cherry, pipe tobacco, red rope licorice, carnations, mushrooms, decomposing forest floor, leather, tomato leaf, cedar box, a bar of Irish Spring that has been drying out in my in-laws shower basement for years (super specific but IYKYK); there is a little bit of VA too…but this is Italy baby so what do you expect? On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose with a bit of a high-grade Aceto Balsamico di Modena thing going too. The finish is super long, grippy and savory. A beautiful example from the southern part of Gaiole. This is entering its early drinking window and should be great for the next 10-15 years.

October 22, 2021 - Wine Spectator 40th Anniversary; 10/21/2021-10/23/2021 (Marriott Marquis): Very fresh with great acid and bright red fruits. It's a quicker finish wine. Strikes me as one that really needs food (ideally some tomato based).

March 3, 2018 - Another good bottle. Very good. Lots of fruit, spice, leather, earth on the palate.

July 17, 2017 - Drank over 2 days. Night in the fridge. Very good. Lots of fruit, spice, leather, earth on the palate. Not sure it will improve, but it did a very good job.

February 11, 2017 - Wow, is this ever a great wine. The color is a little darker than I was expecting, but the aromas were just this exotic abyss of white and purple floral notes, with citrus, ripe strawberry, dried herbs, plenty of soil and a little touch of VA (that was gone after 30 minutes), I was instantly in love. This offers a medium>medium+ body, but where it really distinguishes itself is on the palate. You see, I was having this s/b/s with a 1989 Grattamacco, and whereas the very lovely Grattamacco was a very fine wine, and excellent on its own in an aged/mature claret sort of way, the SGaR had this whoosh of acidity -- not cutting, more like a cool, steady, and confident stream. And why that matters is because I was having the wines with beef short ribs, braised with whole San Marzano tomatoes, garlic and coffee - in other words, pretty bold food, and the 1989 was simply outgunned, if you will. The SGaR, on the other hand, cut through it like a hot knife through butter, it was a sensory experience to behold. Over the next few days this saw some change, and I liked, erm, loved it, for different reasons all the way through day three. Stunning wine right now, with more good things to come, no doubt. 14,0% abv. highly recommended
