Community Tasting Notes 23

  • BAJRiley Likes this wine: 90 points

August 30, 2021 - Appearance: ruby, well progressed to brick/tawny. Nose: old leather, Christmas cake, stewed black fruits, some spice, good oak, hint of eucalyptus.

Palate: medium to full bodied. Smooth texture. Lingering finish. Well integrated tannins.

The fruit has faded. For me this is still drinking okay but others will not like it and say it is past its best. Not as good as the 1990 I had recently but still very good.

August 4, 2019 - Excellent. My records indicated one bottle left but there were 2. The first was flawed - corked, past it. These notes relate to the last one which was superb. But it's not got long to go, unlike the 96 which seems ageless.
Colour: back berries, crimson edges. Preferred this previously to the 96 but this is surpassed now by the 96.
Bouquet: black fruits - cherries, berries, black olives, sour cherries, blueberries, liquorice, spicey, smokey, dusty mint
Palate: like bouquet, dusty berries, full bodied, big soft fine grained tannins, long clean acidic finish.

March 5, 2019 - Excellent. Same comments as November 20128 and earlier, and same vertical tasting. Still fresh as well as potent.

November 24, 2018 - Excellent wine with similar comments to earlier this month and year. Tasted in a vertical lineup with 1996 and 1998 and this was the favourite, perhaps because the most robust and fullest bodied. Drinking superbly.

    November 9, 2018 - Excellent.
Colour: deep blackberry, some browning, even tawny
Bouquet: dusty mint, sour cherries, blueberries
Palate: as bouquet, mint is more promenade, mineral chewy texture, big bodied that opens out considerably as it breathes, big soft tannins, leather, dusty black berries, long clean finish.
