March 13, 2017 - Duca Enrico was the first commercially available Nero d'Avola red wine with its 1984 vintage. The grapes are sourced from low-yielding bush-trained vineyards. Aged for 18 months in oak barrels.

Very deep and dark black cherry color with some pale bricking towards the rim. The nose feels rather closed and reticent with aromas of dusty earth, some minty character, a little bit of raisin and a hint of ripe dark berries. The nose opens up little by little with air, gaining more fruit and expression. The wine is full-bodied, silky and gentle on the palate with very mature flavors of Sun-Maid raisins, wizened dark berries, some peppery spice and a hint of molten milk chocolate. The wine is lacking a bit structure with its medium acidity and quite gentle and almost fully resolved tannins. The finish is rich and a bit more tannic with some astringent grip and quite sweet and long flavors of overripe plums, some raisins, rich blackberries and a hint of peppery spice.

A nice and quite developed Nero d'Avola with some weight and complexity, but also so much maturity that the wine obviously feels that it is about as old as it gets. Most likely it has reached its plateau of maturity some 10 years ago and is now going downhill. The wine isn't oxidized or fallen apart yet, but most of the fruit flavors have already evolved to the rather raisiny state and the structure seems to be going a bit too soft now. Overall this is an enjoyable and balanced mature wine, but comparing it to the Duca Enrico 2000 that I tasted alongside this does no justice to this wine - the wines are only one year apart, but whereas this one is taking its last breaths, vintage 2000 is firmly going up. Due to the lack of structure here, I wouldn't enjoy this wine with food - most likely this doesn't have what it takes to cut through the food anymore.

April 1, 2009 - Totally unlike the last, hay-fest, bottle. This was very good. Big fruit. Balanced. Quite good. Nose and taste of berries. Soft/round mouth-feel. Based on the other notes here, there are some funky bottles out there. If you happen to get a good one it is quite enjoyable.
