May 10, 2020 - With the lockdown taking longer and longer I thought I'd go for something different. Decided on this 'oddbal' DOC Cortona, (Tuscany, near Umbria), 100% Syrah 🍇 from the excellent '09 vintage.

18 days of fermentation, 16 months of ageing in new French oak barrels. Beautiful ruby/purplish colour.

Lovely black fruit in the front evolving into spicy vanilla like notes. Juicy, leather -y, suede/satin-like and rich in texture. Perfectly integrated tannins.

An absolute pleasure and not my last Cortona Syrah!

October 16, 2019 - Modern, heavily extracted, fairly heavy oaked. Lacking varietal character and sense of place. Technically very good to excellent, and yet soulless. 89-90.

July 30, 2019 - Had at Purple Pig. Did not take detailed notes, though this did have the classic Syrah characteristics of meat and pepper. Extremely nice

March 8, 2015 - Second Sunday Group: Produttori del Barbaresco Riservas (L's): Tasted blind, as M wanted the group's opinion. Deep inky opaque color with notes of vanilla, blackberry and dark fruit and violets. Full-bodied with firm, sweet tannins and flavors of black fruit, vanilla and brown sugar. Kind of fun in that big, full throttle way. Guessed Syrah/Petite Sirah blend.
