February 18, 2020 - This example of the 82 Gruaud Larose is stunning, with a big but mellow nose immediately after pouring. This is full of everything wonderful about the Medoc with a fresh, cassis and blueberry core, cedar, pencil, loam and elements that are slightly savory accenting the subtle lavender nuances. Tremendously complete and complex. Similar on the palate, where the tannins have become very supple.

I'm not sure how representative a bottle this is, but for what it's worth this was excellent immediately after pouring and seemed to hold level for the following hour it was in the decanter. Poured back into the bottle to take to the restaurant and re-tasted a couple hours late, this had totally fallen apart and was completely indistinguishable from the majestic wine that was present at first.

January 20, 2020 - Bordeaux 1982: not quite 40 years on (Chez Konstantina): I initially rated this higher than the Cos d'Estournel, tasted just before, but I give it the same score. Why? The next morning, with only about two serious sips of wine mixed with degraded tannin left in open bottles, the Cos seemed to have fared better. But this takes nothing away from the Gruaud, also still enjoyable the next morning. While enjoyed with roasted leg of lamb, the Gruaud gave off such a fine panoply of aromas, from floral to tobacco to graphite to blood orange. Its palate came across more full-bodied than the Cos and it seemed to have more grip. This morning, it still does, but I get a sense of brett that is stronger than it was last night. Anyway, an excellent 1982 to be sure!

January 6, 2020 - The vintage has become a real lottery with bottle variance, and this bottle was exceptional but not quite up to some of the other bottles of this wine. It is essential that this has a couple of hours in the decanter because the initial Cordier characteristics are overwhelming on the nose, but decent aeration blew away the harsher barnyard taints. Essentially it is a beautiful old school Bordeaux, fully mature and from a bygone era. Musty old leather and faint barnyard combines with blackcurrant and plum to dominate the nose and palate. The depth is exceptional and the finish is pushing 60 seconds. With the right bottle this is the best example of Gruaud Larose drinking of the last 50 years. However, with the 750ml format I would venture to say that it really should be consumed over the next couple of years to avoid the chance of spoilt bottles.

December 28, 2019 - This bottle purchased on or near release, bottom neck level, deep ruby color. Lovely bouquet of pure fruit without earth or tobacco. The palate is deep and impressive, the flavor of dark plum. What it doesn’t have is the complexity and intrigue of the very best examples of the vintage. It’s better quite cool which emphasizes the wonderful, if simple, fruit.
