November 29, 2014 - This wine is not done. It's not "at peak" but I think that's why I've scored it an 89. Probably would have given this one an 84 a year ago due. Keep in mind that what I've both said and about to say is a matter of personal preference regarding California Syrah. The wine was uncorked with minimal cork bleed (3-4mm). The nose was not overdomineering Syrah. There was a metallic element, but it blew off after about 20 minutes. The nose on this wine reminded me of an aged Northern Rhone syrah blend, and at about 2/3 Syrah on this wine. The entry was not overheated -- nice mellowed out Cali Syrah that had a lot of boysenberry and licorice characteristics with a hint of clove. I imagine that, almost 2 years ago when I bought this wine, it was probably very overdomineering blackberry, olive, and cured meat. The middle of this wine was very soft, making it very drinkable and an excellent complement to chili that already had a great flavor profile to begin with. The finish is where this wine started to show the bacon fat, with a hint of olive on an aged boysenberry core. Additional bottle age may help mellow out the syrah more, but I don't really see this one improving much. I'd say that this one is done by the end of 2015.

July 26, 2014 - Nicely done - just the right amount of dark cherry fruit. Reasonably complex, nice finish, almost glycerin like texture. Tastes like double the price.
The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like cherry, dust and black pepper. It tastes like black currant (cassis), cherry, dust and black pepper. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.

August 25, 2013 - Smoky taste. Taste improves with aeration. Decant 1 hour before drinking.

April 15, 2013 - Over ripe fruit aromas of cherry, plum, and strawberry jam come through with pepper aromas and faint hints of chocolate, sugar and cinnamon.
The palate has a voluptuous body yet lacks the tannins and complexity to keep it balanced. the acidity is medium-minus, just enough to keep it from being flat and jammy flavors of strawberry blueberry and raspberry. Overall monolithic with the over extracted fruit and closer to the Apothic Red than Prisoner.

February 17, 2013 - Deep & dark, nice fruit forward wine, great with food or an alone glass.
