July 11, 2019 - Call me crazy, but this is a wonderful Merlot! I’ve had it in my cellar for 10 years and decided to pull it out. I did not decant or let it go more than 1/2 hour. Fabulous! Balanced, great fruit and among the best Merlot’s I’ve had. Go figure.

January 20, 2010 - Starting to show its age, fades over an hour or so, bit of fruit still left. Good value wine for a party.

December 13, 2009 - Drinking well, nice nose, fruit filled, stong finish

November 24, 2009 - I think the 2002 vintage from Napa is going through an awkward stage. Even the 2002 Joe Phelps’s Insignia, Wine Spectator’s Wine of The Year, is tasting a bit hollow. From the nose of the Engel you would never guess it’s a CA Merlot, it smells more like a across between and Ausie Shiraz and a Burgundy Pinot Noir. The first attack is ripe jammy red fruit followed by toasty burned wood, wet stone, and muddy soil. Unfortunately in the mouth this wine falls apart, it has loads of sour cherries but not much else, tannins are extremely weak which may indicate it’s going down hill. Another disappointment is the finish is short, very short.

This would have been spectacular a few years ago and I am hoping it will make a recovery.

Remember you don’t drink the label.

(Engel Family Merlot) #2; VaynerPAZZZ on QPR; COLOR-dark; NOSE-hedonistic fruit bomb; Starburst citrus fruits (lemon, lime & tangerine); very heavy on a mix of blackberry & blueberry jam; a little fake for me; TASTE-massive explosion of cherry & blueberry bombs; heavy Oak Monster; a eucalyptus/mint component; solid, but not for me; some will like; Aussie like; nice Vanilla & Cream; GV-89
