March 29, 2024 - A lot of Bordeaux for little money!

March 8, 2024 - I have found most '99s from the Médoc gracious and elegant in spite of a consensus which tended to dismiss them as light for early drinking. However, I was surprised that this bottle at close to 25 years was holding up so well. I can reproduce my TN from 2016 with very little editing. Open and quite complex aromatics with red fruit, summer flowers, a balsamic touch and a faint hints of varnish and cedar. Medium bodied, still traces of primary red fruit with the graciousness typical of the vintage, some secondary notes, silky texture and fresh acidity and some remains of tannic structure both enough for balance. No signs of decline in this bottle. Alas my last of a very rewarding stash of Poujeaux from the 90s. Very good.

April 28, 2023 - The first 10 minutes the wine was still quite balanced with typical old school Bordeaux aromas. But then it became slightly acidic. Little residual fruit, plus tertiary aromas that already had hints of coffee. Still enjoyable for old wine lovers, especially with food, but overall close to the end of its life.

January 24, 2022 - This has a small, darkish-ruby core, and gradates through lightish-ruby to brick-red to end at a russet rim. I can understand how the nose might be called meaty, but to me it's more metallic than fleshy. I'm finding the nose to to be rather woody and revealing fruit which has not achieved ideal ripeness. On first taste, the palate is distinctly sour and shrill, but after three hours sat in the decanter it slowly improves. Which is not to say the wine brings on the charm by the time the last glass is filled. It doesn't. Medium bodied, like proper claret, but it's stern and unresponsive to my call for a lot more fruit sweetness. Maybe my expectations for what, in overall terms, is a very good wine, were set too high after a d'Angludet of the same vintage.

July 10, 2020 - My last bottle Poujeaux from this vintage,
pnp, healthy long cork, tremendous smell, very meaty, like raw dry aged meat, mushrooms, some cassis in the background,
very spicy initially, really ready for business, needs no more air to deliver, very good balance and structure, showing some dark cassis, meat and earthy tones, long smooth finish, great bottle, enjoy the next years, ***, around 89, 90+
