Community Tasting Notes 6

    July 20, 2017 - A deep, fairly mature colour.
Slightly dusty nose, with sweet black fruit and some floral notes. With aeration there are more leather and prune notes.
Deep, poised palate. Rich, creamy texture, with black fruit and bitter chocolate. Initially, it seems very spicy on the finish, but it quickly become apparent that that is just alcoholic heat.
For me, the prominent alcohol spoils this. Indeed, I'd even wonder if the 14% on the label might be under-stated. Which is a shame, as when you can ignore that, the flavours here are very interesting.

March 8, 2017 - Peppery, with notes of beef blood, chocolate, and black fruits. Good by itself or with food. Medium-bodied.

Edit: after 3 hours of air, it loses its acidity. Drink now if you have it.

November 19, 2016 - Black and red fruit, some earth, flabby and kind of meh... so different from the still delicious 2009

May 28, 2015 - On pop-and-pour: Sanguine with a delightful floral end. The oak is still a bit prominent for my tastes, so I'll probably wait a couple of years to open the other bottle; but if you're not as oak-sensitive as I am, you'll probably find this one ready now. Alcohol content feels a tad higher than the listed 14.1%. Will post an addendum after the wine has had some air.

Addendum: after some aeration, delicate flavors of blackberry, blueberry, vanilla and white chocolate emerge.

This bottle was very American is style, and feminine. My Syrah palate is solidly centered in the Northern Rhone....but if you like feminine American-styled syrahs, you may well like this one.

May 22, 2015 - Unfortunately there wasn't much going on here. The others that were released at the same time were very good but there was nothing "wrong" about the wine so I'm not sure what to make of it. Dumb phase? Over the hill? Tried upon opening and it was flat, seemed reasonable since it had been in the cellar for the last couple of years.... but after several hours of air time it was still lifeless - little fruit which just muddled along through the mid-palate before ending fairly generically. As a whole I've really enjoyed these wines, in fact I'm looking forward to the new release this coming weekend, but this was just a bummer.
