Community Tasting Notes 7

November 6, 2020 - Last bottle and last of the Mohicans purchased many years ago. I would say that the tasting note from 2018 is spot on, except the cola note is about * 2 what it was back then. Such an incredible Franc, and this bottle with the combination of age and complexity is arguably the best domestic Cabernet Franc I've tasted to date. The chocolate was there, but this was more of a dried raspberry and cola dominated wine with lavender and white flowers in the background. Still actually rather acidic on the entry and as full bodied as a Cab Franc can get. Today, this would get a rare 98 rating from me, one bump up from the 97 I gave this over 2 years ago. This wine is definitely at peak. No more appreciation for this one. A rare bird right now to acquire with perfect provenance...but I will certainly try to get a couple more of these and perhaps roll the dice!

October 9, 2018 - Wow. This wine has done quite a bit of growing in the last five years. One of my last 2, and what a beauty! The more spry lily and daisy flower notes have changed to more of a dried lavender and rose petal. The nose is black cherry spice, hint of plum, hint of cola. Entry has a split second of sweet, dense black cherry right on the front with ample acidity that goes to a darker black fruit note to the middle. Cola, pie spice, fig newton, a touch of iodine. Finishes dense and powerful. Dang. Ridiculously happy with this wine. This is the best 9 bottles of wine I've ever begged someone to sell me, and was in the right place at the right time when JRE came to the Ft Worth Club all those years ago!

August 13, 2013 - This wine has really mellowed out. It is closer to a pop and pour but still needs 30-45 decant before it becomes very approachable. After it did sit for a bit, it was a very enjoyable wine and this is probably the most enjoyable I've seen this wine vs. the other six bottles which were still amazing but probably a little more harsh. This is the true embodiment of California Cab Franc.

July 22, 2013 - An amazing cab franc. This is probably the single best cab franc I've had, and I think that it is JUST coming into the low end of its maturity right now. This bottle required very little decanting to unleash the beast. See other notes for the highlights of this gem. Lots of red licorice and spicy, black fruits abound. It's got a little more heat on the front than I anticipated, but it dies out by the end, leaving a very nice full bodied finish. I keep my 2013-2017 drink by dates. If you have this one I'd try to find any willpower you might have to hold it in your cellar until 2014 or 2015. I have a feeling my other 3 bottles aren't going to make it.

February 9, 2013 - And another one bites the dust. This one seemed to have a little more floral intensity and tannicity than some of the others. Opened and decanted about 70 minutes ahead of dinner. A very nice wine and I do feel it is age worthy until probably 2017-2018. The other 3 bottles consumed were a little less expressive reviewing my notes. This one has the potential to be 96-97 IMO (I do't think I've really said that about many wines that are in this age group), and I dare say those other 3 bottles were consumed a little too early.
