July 2, 2014 - Count me impressed. Dark, slightly cloudy, deep red color and beautiful, deep, rich aromatics of bramble, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and wet earth. Fruit aromas are dark, almost black, raspberry and dark-but-a-bit tart cherry. Alcohol is perfectly balanced; tannins are fine but slightly rustic; and, acidity is bright but nicely balanced. Finish is long. Too bad I didn't buy more bottles.

February 11, 2013 - Picked up from Arlequin in San Fran.
Counoise is rare as a 100% varietal. Non existent in the Rhone valley, or anywhere, for that matter in France, that I have seen,
so its always fun to taste as a 100% variety, although philosophically I believe its best blended, usually.
But, when done well, like this, worth grabbing.
Counoise can resemble some of the best of Grenache, but with other unique attributes.
Color: quite dark purple, almost syrah like, surprisingly.
Nose: has improved each day over 3 days and is now very expressive.
Great mineral, wet granite notes. Dark raspberry. Black cherry.
Palate - has improved greatly as well over 3 nights, each night.
The fruit & minerality seems to concentrate and improve each night.
Now its full of minerality, the all tart red fruit is more complex and layered.
Tart blackberry, bright red fruit, hint of smoky meat.
I liked the wine first night but wasn't gaga. Now I thinks its amazing.
Its also brilliantly balanced at 12.3% alc (how the hell doe he get these alc #s - Mendo after all!) Bravo
