February 8, 2020 - Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 9 *shared* bottles] from 02/07/20 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): I *do* APPRECIATE you having shared different vintages of the Monte Rosso Zin, José! :)

N: Eucalyptus, brown sugar atop mulled, dk cherries, but with notes of earth/leather?

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with very NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by a bit of astringent pucker which quite resolves by the LONG, impeccably BALANCED finish with a LOVELY tangy/swtness to the firming, but quite unoffensive, dusty tannins. An IMPRESSIVE wine for now & through '23, I'd guess. My EXC+/Exceptional-; 83 pts WS (12/15/05).

April 17, 2018 - Lithe and with good body and firm acidity propping it up. Medium ruby with no evident bricking. Nose is all roasted plum and blackberry, with an emphasis on the “roasted”. A little must and damp earth and a good bit of mint and savory herb with a dusting of bittersweet cocoa. The palate follows as medium bodied with good attack and long finish but a bit thin in the middle and the heat starts to come through at the end, along with some glycerin. A nice bottle that has held up well. I think this may be the apotheosis of aged Zinfandel, along with old Ridge perhaps, and while enjoyable, I think I prefer them quite a bit younger. A good experiment though... I would not say this has anything in common with old Cab.

October 18, 2013 - The aging process for Zinfandel is always interesting. While most are best when young, some can indeed age and, when they do, they end up tasting like aged Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the case here, where this well-cellared bottle was presented to our Friday tasting group in double-blind fashion. The bottle was kindly provided by M.B. Opaque red/garnet, it displayed aromas of ripe plum, coffee, cigar box and loamy earth. Full-bodied, with medium acidity and medium sweet tannins, it dazzled the tasters with a flavor profile dominated by chocolate-covered cherries. Despite being listed as 15.4%, the alcohol was nicely integrated and the middle palate was solid. Long and smooth on the finish, all tasters were thoroughly impressed and most guessed that it was a California Cabernet. I personally guessed that it was a 2001 Napa Cabernet. Owners of well-cellared bottles will be very happy with this wine. Drink now-2018.

August 24, 2010 - Group liked it, but not so much I; bit off-putting nose of sulfur or eggs; a bite to the wine, light weight.
