Community Tasting Notes 3

August 20, 2013 - Macerated for 7-10 days in rotofermenters. Aged for 10 months in stainless steel.

Somewhat translucent dark cherry color. Somewhat muted but sweet nose with aromas of ripe forest fruits, loamy earth, sweet raspberries and sweet hints of volatile lift. Despite its sweet nose, the wine is very dry and heavily acid-driven on the palate. The flavors are pure, intense and complex with notes of sour cherry, ripe raspberry, stone dusty minerality, some tannic bitterness and hints of volatile complexity. The tannic grip here feels more like that of Barolo than that of normal entry-level Langhe Nebbiolo. The finish is quite tightly-knit, structured and somewhat astringent with persistent, pure flavors of cherries both sweeter and darker and more sour and bitter, ripe raspberry, tart redcurrant, some stony minerality and a hint of earthy spice.

This is a very impressive effort for a Langhe Nebbiolo: despite its youthful, fruit-forward character the wine shows surprisingly much depth and complexity with remarkable grip, power and character. You really need something a bit more hearty to go with a wine this grippy and structured. If you are expecting only a humble, easy-drinking Nebbiolo, you might be in for a surprise: this is more like a youthful Barolo that has never seen oak. Quite approachable now, but I'd let the wine settle for 3-5 more years, just to coax some more complexity and maturity out from the wine. At 8,70€ for a 12 cl glass this wine is priced very reasonably, but at 37,80€ for a full bottle in a wine shop the wine feels somewhat overpriced - after all, even though this is better than your regular Langhe Nebbiolo, this shouldn't be priced like a good Barolo.
