Community Tasting Notes 3

November 24, 2010 - Black Glass Society: Chapitre du Hairy Crabs (Capital Restaurant, New Bridge Road): Good, but unusual Condrieu. Vintage characteristic maybe, but this was very clean and clear. Kudos to Elsa, because we all thought it was a heavy Chard when served in the black glasses - only she called it a Condrieu. Nose had oodles of creamy vanilla oak, white chocolate, some nuttiness, yellow fruit, mushrooms, beeswax and hints of white flowers. On reflection, quite typical Condrieu descriptors, just that everything but the vanilla creme was rather toned down and quite subtle. Same thing on the palate. Clean, high-toned, there was a sweet ripeness and heavy texture, but quite a bit of freshness in its little cherries and citrus fruit flavours. Pass the mid-palate, I got more white chocolate, some white flowers and towards the finish, some smoky minerality and almond nuttiness. A nice wine overall. Not that easy to pair with the food surprisingly, perhaps a function of its relatively lowish acidity, but certainly interesting on its own.

December 18, 2009 - Reticent on the nose. Aromas of unripe peach, starfruit, minerals and a hint of honey. Medium body with good acid for condrieu. Notes of lemon, peach, starfruit and a medium-long tropical fruit and mineral finish. A very clean style of viognier.

March 12, 2007 - This wine really grew on me with a great finsish of sandstone, minerals, lemon balm, chameal tea, tangerine, mace, rosehips, white flowers, almond blossoms. The tea flavors and sandstone is what really stood out in this subtle and finesse driven wine that showed a wonderful elegant beauty.
