Community Tasting Notes 5

February 27, 2017 - 2003 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Iggy's, Hilton Hotel, Singapore): A brilliant effort in a difficult vintage, this was a superb wine that made the 2003 Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet next to it feel like the ugly step-sister. It strarted out with a wonderful nose, riper than usual, but very attractive in its cream and sweet yellow fuited aromas lightly layered with hints of toastiness and exotic cardammon spice, all this with a twang of underlying underlying minerality. It was on the palate where this really shone though. It had that beautiful Ramonet clarity and balance, with barely a tint of over-ripe, surmaturite tones on its warm yellow fruited notes flecked with gentle notes of spice, toast and mineral in the long, full, seemingly endless finish. It was super-powerful, yet somehow still stylish and elegant, and quite effortlessly so at that, pulsing with an incredible quiet intensity. A beautiful, beautiful wine. Complete, open and transparent, and drinking birlliantly well now. This has gotten pretty low scores from most critics compared to other vintages, but on the night, I thought it was fantastic.

August 25, 2007 - Ammonia on the nose. Pears and caramel. Rich concentrated finish. Quite oaky. This wine is no where near as nice as the '01.

February 3, 2007 - Masa's Cheval Blanc dinner. Totally closed at first but came alive after about an hour. Sweet finish, typical of the vintage. Not fantastic, especially for a Montrachet.

November 17, 2005 - Tasting at Ramonet (2004, 2003 and others) (Ramonet cellars): Captivating nose with lots of spices, a bit green/acidic in the mouth with again the crème brulée aromas. Very complex but still some alcohol in the background that might detract from the whole showing. Superb finish and incredible (truly incredible) length. Clearly way way way above any other 2003 white from the same domaine, there is just no comparison. It is still not necessarily at the same level as other vintages from this fantastic wine and the style is quite peculiar.
