January 25, 2024 - Campbells Cellar Door (Rutherglen): Three topaques (missing the entry ‘Rutherglen’ bottling) tasted side-by-side.
NV Classic Topaque {500ml, screwcap, 17.5%, A$40} Lifted honey & toffee, medium-sweet fruity palate somewhat emphasizing the sugar. Average solera age 12-15 years.
NV Grand Topaque {375ml, screwcap, 17.5%, A$70} Bigger aromas and flavours, still toffee, malt, walnuts but with a more toasted character. Still medium sweet, balanced with acidity. Long finish. Very good and quite a quality jump from the Classic, although the different bottle sizes disguise this a bit if you just look at prices. Solera age 25-30 years.
NV Rare Topaque ”Isabella” {375ml, screwcap, 17.5%, A$150} Almost black colour. Similar toffee and honey aspect of the Grand bottling, but with a smoothly syrupy texture, despite plenty of balancing acidity, and endless concentration. An extra level over the ‘Grand’ but not worth twice the money. Solera documented at 50 years, but longer in reality.

January 13, 2024 - Tasted at the winery in Rutherglen. The tasting was lovingly put together by the staff of the winery.
Bitter orange and caramel on the nose; sweeter than the "Rutherglen" version.
Searing on the palate; very good sensation; better - to my taste - and more presence than the Muscat of the same category.

June 1, 2020 - NobleRottersSydney - ten and twenty reds (Geoffrey's place): {500ml, screwcap, 17.5%} [DavidH] Quite youthful, although that’s often the hallmark of the “Classic” designation from Rutherglen across all producers. Caramel sauce aromas with a hint of molasses. Sugary palate, a touch gloopy to be honest – could use more acidity. Medium weight, medium/sweet in flavour. Goes OK with the right dessert; finishes medium length but without a lot of complexity.

November 26, 2019 - A sweet wine, quite sweet with lots of butterscotch. Touches of tawny port about it in style too. Nice.

July 5, 2019 - Return to Aus; 6/23/2019-7/5/2019 (Adelaide, South Australia wine regions, Tassie, Yarra, etc.): The final wine picked by the Somm at Quay to go with our final dessert. This was caramel and almost a touch buttery and very nice and complemented the food without overpowering. Good choice.
