March 2, 2013 - 2013 spring auction in Kloster Eberbach/Eberbach Abbey (Kloster Eberbach, Rheingau): Nose with yellow apples, honey, spice, petroleum, some firne ("old wine notes"), rather smoky, rather sweetish nose. The palate is dry, with winter apple, firne bitterness, and rather high acidity. OK aftertaste, not too concentrated. The nose is better than the palate, but the wine sticks together. 86 p?
It is always fascinating to taste wines as old as this one that are fully drinkable, even in those cases when fully acceptable "wrinkles" and other signs of age means that the score doesn't get that high.

March 2, 2013 - Hessische Staatsweingüter Wine Auction Pre-Sale Tasting (Kloster Eberbach): As amazing as yesterday.

March 1, 2013 - Rheingau Gourmet Festival "Versteigerungsspitzen & Schatzkammerweine", Kloster Eberbach, early Mar 2013: clear amber; nutty; noble austerity; round, soft texture.

Today this vineyard is called "Berg Schlossberg"

March 1, 2013 - Tasting and dinner with old wines from Kloster Eberbach (Kloster Eberbach, Rheingau): Golden colour. Nose with yellow fruit, yellow apple, citrus, dried fruit, well preserved fruit notes, smoke, some spice, some firne notes with moss. The palate is not completely dry (it goes in the off-dry direction) with yellow apples, mint, some bitterness, high acidity; not too concentrated. A rather impressive nose, while the palate isn't quite as impressive (and as always I'm disturbed by bitterness that can be too much felt), although the wine sticks together fine. 87 p?
Scoring a wine this age is obviously a bit complicated, since the fascination in tasting a 70 year old wine (produced in a style where many would consider 10-15 years as "old") goes way beyond the wines "blind performance", which is what has guided my scoring. So while I probably come across as very frugal, I would like to stress how fascinating a tasting experience this wine was.

March 1, 2013 - Dinner by Sebastian Lühr * with "Versteigerungsspitzen & Schatzkammerweine" (Rheingau Gourmet & Wein Festival, Kloster Eberbach): The Eiseninger vineyard was incorporated into the Berg Schlossberg vineyard by the 1971 wine law and this 1943 is the only wine from the Eiseninger vineyard in the entire Schatzkammer of the Staatsweingut. Alpine herbs, eucalyptus, blonde tobacco, dried fruits, very stable; on the palate completely dry (the original 10 - 15 grams of residual sugar have long been consumed) with life-sustaining acidity and noticeable bitters, good intensity of flavours, lemon and cream; the finish is slightly short - a bit blunt if you will. A very rare treat.
