March 2, 2013 - 2013 spring auction in Kloster Eberbach/Eberbach Abbey (Kloster Eberbach, Rheingau): Orange colour with amber. Nose with ripe red berries, yellow apple, some dried berries, spice, noticeable smoke. Palate with a slightly sweet attack, powerful concentration, red berries, yellow apple, dried fruit, rather high acidity, some tannin, and mineral. 88 p?
This wine is more powerful and has kept much better than the 1963 served at the same time. It is also better than any red from the 1960s or 1970s I’ve tasted from this producer, and it showed rather consistently compared to the day before, not a small feat for a 60 year old wine! When the wine’s age is factored in, my “honest to what I actually found the glass” is very impressive, and it was completely fascinating to get to taste a Höllenberg back from the days when they obviously were very good.

March 1, 2013 - Rheingau Gourmet Festival "Versteigerungsspitzen & Schatzkammerweine", Kloster Eberbach, early Mar 2013: pale crimson; herb liqueur, mint, red fruit bowl; austere texture.

March 1, 2013 - Tasting and dinner with old wines from Kloster Eberbach (Kloster Eberbach, Rheingau): Light to medium red colour, brick edge. A good colour for its age! Nose with good concentration of berry notes, ripe red berries, some sweet "liqueur notes", some caramel, smoke, and menthol. Palate with a hint of sweetness, red berries, spice, intense menthol note and minerality, good acidity, some bitterness, and a heavy mouthfeel. 89 p?
This is the best old Spätburgunder I've tasted. Earlier, Kloster Eberbach has uncorked some from the 1960s and 1970s that haven't been nearly as good. There was quite a bit of "minerally red Burgundy" in this wine, and that association I've never had with old Spätburgunder before. And, yes, there was a tiny bit of sweetness, although that's an impression not completely unheard of in old Burgundies. Demonstrates the impressive quality of old Assmannshausen reds from Kloster Eberbach. Also here, the fascination involved in tasting this old a wine goes way beyond the "honest" score I've assigned.

March 1, 2013 - Dinner by Sebastian Lühr * with "Versteigerungsspitzen & Schatzkammerweine" (Rheingau Gourmet & Wein Festival, Kloster Eberbach): Lovely, gentle, warm, mature appearance, not bricked through; wonderfully honeyed nose with vestiges of red fruit (strawberry, rosehip), after a while the characteristic note of smoky bacon appears, lovely depth, mint, very lively; on the palate incredibly vibrant and lively, with wonderful acidity, excellent balance, nice sweetness on the attack; the finish is dry, with noticeable bitters, eucalyptus and mint, very long and intense.
