July 12, 2020 - K guessed 2010 Australian Shiraz, a great guess, since this California version is stuffed with massive Syrah fruit and borderline sweetness. Fortunately the alcohol is under control. Tannins are soft, acidity low. Surprisingly, it becomes better balanced with air so perhaps a few more years in bottle will be helpful. It’s California though, so no trace of earth, this could have come from a tree instead of a vine. Good though on its own terms though with the right food, such as barbecue.

January 31, 2019 - Rich dark velvet texture, more in the style of a ripe Northern Rhone. Dense with great purity of black nearly creamy fruit. In a great place now. Only question is will it develop more nuance? Very tasty

January 22, 2019 - Zurich Supper Club (London Chapter...) w CVA and Andrew (Noize, London UK - Great food and excellent Somm!): One of my contributions, brought along for our Syrah lovers, my only bottle. Nice to bring a rare American Syrah for a London debut. Decanted for about an hour before drinking.
Bright ruby color, youthful. Nose showing black raspberry, truffle, bacon, smoke. Fruit forward palate of bright blue and black fruits, raspberry, mocha and floral notes. Full body and long finish. Tannins still present but fined
The crowd liked it but was't as enthusiastic as prior bottles of Colgin and Saxum we have enjoyed together. Even 8 years in, I think we opened it a bit early, may be better 3-5 years from now. A powerful wine that will last a while if wanting to cellar. My only bottle, if drinking again I would allow for a 2+ hour decant at this stage... -

August 26, 2018 - One Fun-Filled Afternoon Spent Poolside with Friends (Los Olivos, CA): Wow, it’s been a while since I encountered a wine that paired pleasure with seriousness as easily and confidently as this one. Neck and neck with Colgin for the best Napa Syrah I’ve had (though I am due to pop a Tynan, the upstart darling of the moment — fingers crossed!). No need for air. Rich, lush, smooth black fruit, plus a myriad of spice, bacon and truffled aspects. In prime drinking form, I can’t imagine there’s a hurry here.

June 20, 2016 - The super-intense nose filled the room upon opening. Powerful waves of raspberry, dark cherry and mocha but also with touches of fresh soil and spice. For the first 2-3 hours (decanted) the alcohol was too evident. At 4 hours it receded and the wine came into harmony.
Very good now with a 3-4 decant. I plan to try my next bottle in 2020. Definitely upside potential here.1 person found this helpful Comment
