May 24, 2016 - The 1996 Meerlust Rubicon was undoubtedly superb in its prime. In fact the explosive aromatic bouquet of freshly brewed coffee, burnt caramel, licorice and old leather chair can still attest to the greatness once achieved by the wine. However this medium bodied blend of Cabernet and Merlot is now disappointing on the palate with rather hollow and fading hints of chocolate and licorice, virtually no fruit left and a restrained finish at best. This was a great effort which should have been consumed 5 years ago.

June 9, 2007 - Meerlust Rubicon Vertical (Caldesi, London): Very much the family nose: pruney, chocolate fruit with some horse sweat, together with some slight high tones and funk - funky, non-brett farmyard. There's some sweet fruit on the palate, but the overall impression is that it's all nicely integrated. The tannins are especially well integrated in comparison to other vintages. It's a bit reminiscent of one of those Rhone/Burgundy boundary wines. Very Good Indeed.

March 6, 2005 - Mike Biesheuvel also opened this one while at his house for dinner. It was definitely past its prime. Strong tannins and acidity turning now.

(Meerlust Rubicon) Bricking, rust medium dark red with pale meniscus; beautiful Bordeaux-like shitake mushroom and mature black fruit nose; very tasty, rich, elegant, maturing black fruit, plum palate, like a mix of Right Bank and Margaux; medium-plus finish 94+ pts.
