Community Tasting Notes 5

September 25, 2015 - This nosed like it was the oldest wine of the evening... and so it was. A bit of slight funk/mustiness, with some damp-earth. This was still fresh on the palate, with dark-red berries, though the fruit seemed to be drying up somewhat towards the end... Doubt it'll improve any furthur so drink up!

September 25, 2015 - Freddy Mugnier dinner at Jade Palace. Not often that we have 3 '94 Burgs in a single evening. Rather sadly, this confirmed my fear that '94 was indeed a weaker Burgundy vintage. All three wines showed a lack of intensity, seemed rather lean and did not have the potential to live beyond 25-30 years. Having said that, this wine started beautifully. There was a lovely mahogany appearance, you knew there was age, but beatifully aged. There was a gorgeous sandalwood and floral element to this wine, with layers of red fruit like cherries, plums and pomegranate. Very exotic and wild as well. The palate struggled to match up, with more sour and dry fruit, but there was some lovely old dried roses, dirty leather (in a good way), truffle, plums and fig. With extended time, the remaining fruit dried out, leaving lots of black tea, dried leaf and tobacco. Drink up. This wine is at peak.

September 17, 2010 - Musigny and More: Cherry, nutty and oatmeal with some autumn leaves and a touch of a medicinal note in the background. Palate tastes like cherries, it is a bit one note, but still tastes good. Exceeds the vintage reputation.

December 16, 2007 - Still pretty good color. The nose is dominated by prunes, mushrooms and some spicy cherries with a real mustiness that didn't blow off. Silky smooth on the palate, it put on more weight as it opened and revealed nice spicy dark cherry flavors with hints of those prunes and musty mushrooms on the finish. A fine mineral complexity developed after some coaxing. Not a great vintage for this wine by any means but a nice elegant glass of aged Burgundy nonetheless.

January 7, 2007 - A few Sunday burgs at Jeffs house.: This was our backup bottle, which as usual was opened even though we didn't need a backup. A quiet little unassuming wine, this was pleasant, but not particularly memorable.

Burgundy-Report

(Mugnier J-F Musigny) Medium red with brick highlights. The nose is an unusual, but not unpleasant, mixture of oxtail soup (!) and stewed rhubarb. Some sweetness and fruit but slightly outweighed by the punchy acidity and tannins. With food the tables are turned and all falls into place. There's no lack of fruit and this wine exhibits a simply fantastic length. 2-3 minutes and it's still going. Excellent, head and shoulders above any other 1994 I've tasted.
