May 8, 2019 - Phillip Togni Retrospective: Shut down today, seemingly still a lot of promise here but this never opened up properly. Could be excellent yet but this may become "will the fruit outlive the tannin".. if yes, greatness in the making.

May 8, 2019 - Philip Togni vertical (1983-96) (Chicago, IL): It's so odd that one of the oldest wines tonight seems to be the one with the most life left. This is closed up tight, with a dark complexion and tons of dust and tannins. There's a mild hint of tobacco as well, but the fruit elements here seem to be bundled up underneath this massive wall of tannin. Probably the most inscrutable of the wines tonight -- this just feels unresolved, shut down, and not ready.

August 18, 2014 - Togni's 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon is still an opaque deep red. As it unfurls in the decanter, the wine unwillingly giving up aromas of blackcurrant, hot bricks and cedar, and on the palate it remains almost painfully structured and tight-nit, with a very deep core of crunchy, savory fruit. The tannins, however, are hard rather than green, and I believe this wine simply needs another decade in the cellar to open up. In that respect, it resembles a serious northern Médoc from a vintage like '66, '75 or '86. Remarkable.

June 1, 2010 - Blind. R.I.P. This wine used to be good but at least this bottle was over the hill. Wine looked great (91;65), very dark with amber edge, and the nose was interesting; very ripe, a bit pruney and huge mint-chocolate. On the palate it was hard, really sour and with a ton of tannins. Too bad I have another few bottles - we'll see.
