May 24, 2022 - I always allow that a rating may be influenced by or arrived at inclusive of memories of a visit. We visited Father and Daughter, went on a muddy truffle hunt, had a marvelous family very abundant lunch, and came away with love for Serradenari, BTW the highest altitude of any Barolo. Ok to the wine, drinking very well now, on the lighter somewhat Burgundian spectrum, went perfectly with a friends and family dinner at La Masseria in NYC’s theater district, go there if you haven’t yet.

January 10, 2016 - Liked this bottle, far more than first one. The year + between drinking certainly helped out. IMO could still even use more time to really hit its stride PnP at BYOB Italian and drank with Lasagna. Paired well.

Predominantly cherry on palate, with spice. Some earthy tones as well, plus some gritty tannins. Last glass drank better than first, fairly solid wine.

June 9, 2015 - Aged for 12 months in barriques (50% new, 50% used) and for another 12 months in larger tonneaux.

Translucent black cherry color with moderate maroon hue. Very sweet-toned and noticeably ripe nose with almost jammy aromas of cherry marmalade, sweet raisiny fruit, some dried figs, a little bit of perfumed floral character, a hint of chocolatey oak and a touch of strawberry. The wine is very ripe, full-bodied and quite juicy on the palate with rather brooding yet sweet-toned flavors of raisiny dark fruits and dried figs, overripe black cherries, some tarry tones, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light dark plum tones, a hint of mocha oak and a touch of toasted wood. The wine is surprisingly high in acidity for such a ripe Nebbiolo, but the structure relies heavily on the tough and grippy tannins. The finish is quite tannic and powerful with lots of mouth-drying grip and intense, sweet-toned flavors of dried sour cherries, black cherry marmalade, some toasty oak spice, a little bit of mocha character, a hint of pruney fruit and a perfumed touch of floral character.

A super-ripe, big and sweet-toned Barolo that is all about rich 2009 vintage fruit: this wine just can't mask away the borderline overripe and - at times - even raisiny fruit tones. It carries its new oak quite well, thanks to the intensity of the fruit flavors, and the structure is undeniably quite impressive here. All in all, this wine feels like it is built for the long haul - if it weren't for the rather monotonous dried-fruit flavors. Because of its overripe fruit flavors, this wine comes across as rather clumsy and ponderous, lacking the brightness and verve of cooler-vintage Nebbiolos. La Tartufaia has often been a quite nice little drop for a semi-modern Barolo, but I'd pass this vintage - despite its nice structure it is just way too ripe for my preference.

December 12, 2014 - pnp, and had with pizza dinner. Highly acidic, with gritty tannins, did not get enough of the red fruit to truly enjoy this. Last glass did taste better than the first, my other bottle will sit for a couple of years. Grade is incomplete right now...but really did not like it all that much.

October 26, 2014 - Dense wine with grainy tannins. Powerful flavours of overripe cherry, tobacco, leather and tar. Balanced acidity holds everything in place. Too young at this point, this Barolo will benefit from a few more years of bottle age. Hold for 3-5 more years (at least).
