December 28, 2023 - From Magnum. Initially somewhat harsh, muted, not much giving. But a completely different experience the 3rd (!) day: really lovely wine. Very smooth, even more so for a Hermitage. The overall impression the 3rd day is: very Rhone but in a velvet glove. Well integrated fruit. Mature with no sign of overdue. This should have several more years to go. It does benefit a lot from breathing, unless you appreciate a more herbal Rhone. Lovely.

November 11, 2023 - Opened with some trepidation and with good reason because from the moment I put my nose in the glass I noticed the oak. And the palate reflects this also. Sweet, polished, succulent dark red fruits. Buffed tannin. I do get a little smoke and bacon fat. And no doubt all the other flavors mentioned in the comments below are present - but it makes no difference because the way I am sensing this wine the oak simply has not integrated into the fruit. It still sits apart like a gateway you have to pass through to get to the fruit behind. A shame because that fruit is now really complex and interesting. Adequate acid. Evidently most adore this wine but it is not for me. It is speaking a language I do not understand. Thankfully just a single bottle, sadly carefully stored for two decades. Bah ! I am wiser now.

June 30, 2022 - Rhône or Nôwhere 2022 (Malcom, Nebraska): A lovely, luxurious and archetypal version of Syrah that showed very well alongside the other late-90’s examples from Hermitage on the table. I felt this showed a little bit better than the “La Chapelle” but it was really close. It’s showing some charming secondary characteristics but has plenty of gas left in the tank.

    (M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon) Dark garnet red color; lovely rich beef broth and roast beef nose; medium bodied, elegant palate of tart red fruit with creamy meat jus and velvety mouth feel, still quite young; medium-plus finish
