October 27, 2023 - 2002 Beaune and Volnay Premier Crus (San Francisco): Corked and completely undrinkable. A real shame since this wine has provided much joy for not many dollars over the years.

April 28, 2023 - Light garnet center with faded browning rim. Nose full of spice, red fruit, and a touch of herbs. Light weight, seductive, harmonious feel. Discretely sweet strawberry and cherry, brown spices, a little earth, fine acidity, and completely resolved tannins. A beautiful, understated mature Volnay, and another highly successful 2002 Jean Boillot bottle.

June 4, 2022 - In a great place right now. Just beautiful

May 27, 2022 - Stained cork to the top on one side. Quite pale. Pretty, detailed red berry fruits on the nose and palate, with some acid derived notes we shall call minerality. But otherwise very clean in its fruit profile. Sweet. There is a real fineness to the complex red fruit. Elegant. Some depth. Fully resolved fine grained tannin. But throughout, to my taste, there is the inescapable presence of rather too much new oak, giving in its imprint an artificial silkiness to the mouthfeel and a slightly confected note to the sweetness. Shame. If you can get behind the oak this is a really pretty wine - and faithful to its origins. A Bobby Kacher import to the USA, which may explain all the new oak. To this day I remember the critic Steve Tanzer’s enthusiastic review of this wine, which enticed me to buy six bottles. Meadows in 2004 acknowledged the new world style of this wine - and it remains almost 20 years later - but nonetheless this wine evidences the captivating beauty of Volnay Caillerets and the somewhat easygoing nature of the 2002 vintage. Will undoubtedly have many ardent fans. Bought on release. Best drink soon but will keep a bit if desired.

Next day - earthier / perhaps a little smoke/ more savory/ markedly less ethereal /quite complete/clearly can be kept

December 31, 2021 - Perhaps a bit past it’s prime but still drinking really well. Beautiful PnP, which was the way to go.
