September 12, 2022 - Tasted regularly over the last decade, this is ready to drink. Fully mature, it is forward for the year and probably is a wine that is not going to improve. Also as the fruit fades some tannic elements are being exposed particularly on the finish. Minimal decanting is needed. 94+

September 8, 2022 - Guy's Night: Open Your Last Bottle (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Very dark red/purple color with a 5mm transition. One hour double decant, drank a couple glasses over 3 hours. This was really, really good though overshadowed by the '83 Montrose tonight. Beautiful in its own right, I've always loved the '89 Cos. Red and black fruits, perfumed, pencil, damp earth and funk. The palate is full bodied and powerful, showing excellent density, cassis, deep raspberry, wood, minerality, pencil and round polished tannins. This almost youthful, this will may go forever.

September 8, 2022 - Open your last bottle (Jason and Mariellen's house): Decanted 1 hour, then back into the bottle for a few hours, before pouring a good-sized glass for myself that I drank over 2 hours. Perfume, funk, tobacco, sandalwood, tar, black fruits, orange rind, old leather and a bit of funk. I wished that I'd decanted this 2 hours, but at least I left myself a note from the previous bottle to decant at least an hour. Sadly, my last bottle, since that was the tasting theme.

September 8, 2022 - Guys Night Out - Open your last bottle of something you had multiple bottles of at one time!: See galewskj's notes for treatment. This was surprisingly young, and improved quite a bit throughout the evening! Very fruit forward with medium tannins that got finer as the evening progressed. Unlike some of the other notes, I think this wine needs another few years to completely come together (and I like my wines with plenty of fruit). There is enough fruit in this wine to allow the tannins to resolve better and to gain some additional tertiary flavors, IMO (at least for this bottle).

Nose showed black and purple fruit, cigar box and tobacco, with some floral notes too. Palate showed plenty of cassis, plum and hints of red currant, with leather, cedar and tobacco in the background. Pretty nice balance between fruit and tertiary flavors, but a little more tertiary flavors would elevate this wine. Also, as previously stated, tannins were very prevalent, but did start smoothing out with time in the glass....if they ever completely smoothed out, this would reach the top level! 93 to 94 points, with an easy 94 toward the end of the night!

August 21, 2022 - 20th of 24, opened 90 minutes then splash decanted, perfect cork and level, surprisingly youthful and little changed from last bottle noted in October 18, nicely layered and with more relaxed fruit expression than more recent vintages, plus a certain silkiness, mature with limited upside, 10+ years. VF (18.5).
