Community Tasting Notes 92

November 20, 2022 - Nice fruit forward Pinot noir; notes of Syrah or similar taste very prominent; not earthy like other Pinots; tannins still present and probably has several more years of life remaining

September 4, 2022 - Really enjoyed it. Typical California Pinot — fruit forward. Drinking beautifully 10 years in!

June 4, 2022 - Delicious and impressive. Nice floral nose, lasting 40-second finish. Tannins still clearly present, primary fruit still up front, nice balance, and good life ahead. Big body and mouthfeel for a 10 year old pinot, almost reminds me cab-like. Love it. This is one of those bottles I love to love as it has been stored safely at cellar temperature since its release and so validates my cellar integrity. Mom picked this out back in 2014. Paired with cheeseburger and mashed potatoes.

April 7, 2021 - Zero notes and had without really paying attention. Pretty much a gulpable easy drinking red fruited, sweet, short finish Pinot. I 100% can see why and how this appeals to many, and I am by no means a Pinot snob, it’s simply too one dimensional for my taste. This would easily pair well with BBQ, anything with some umpf to it. If you are in the mood for this, it will deliver.

I tend to enjoy some big in your face slutty wines but they have to have a bit more going on.

March 13, 2021 - Slo-oxed for 30 minutes, but more air time is better. The color was a deep purple. The nose was all dark red fruits and earth. The medium to plus bodied palate showed these dark red fruits as black cherry, raspberry, and a touch of blackberry, along with some spice and earth. The acidity is juicy and relatively balancing, and there is a touch of tannin on the finish. This wine could hold for another couple of years.
The Las Alturas vineyard is near the southern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands, where the pinot grapes tend to yield darker fruit flavors. However, the abundance of these dark red fruit flavors, as well as some black fruit flavors in this wine lead me to ask whether Joe Wagner might have blended in some Syrah along with the pinot?!?
