October 1, 2018 - Followed over two nights. This is starting to come around nicely. Lots of primary black fruit, some baking spice, and a little herbal and peppery nuance. Maybe a little one-dimensional on its own at this stage. Plenty of acid and firm tannins will allow this to keep aging for some time. Drink now through 2025, maybe out to 2030. Surprisingly, this Toro perks up and comes off as much more complex when paired with a homemade red sauce and sausage. We would certainly recommend that pairing. "Very good-to-excellent," 90/100.

June 14, 2017 - Deep red with classic spicy nose and ripe tinta de toro (tempranillo) flavors as accented by 2 years in barrel. Hard to believe it's a 2001 — tastes 10 years younger. Still has a ways to go.

April 16, 2017 - Three+ hour decant before pairing with aged cheddar and, later, Porterhouse steaks. Calming down somewhat compared to last year's note. After significant time in the decanter we were greeted by blackberries, woodsmoke, and a medium(+)-length finish full of sweet, crystalline purple fruits and smoked meat. High acid approaching "shrill" and intense, woody tannins provided a hard structure.

The latter elements still point to a "hold" recommendation for this wine. Even so, with enough air this is a fair accompaniment to a good steak. "Very good-to-excellent," 90/100, for now, but possibly higher in another year or two.

November 10, 2016 - Needs a bit more time, but delicious. A bit too prominent notes of oak, but good fruit and great with food.
