April 4, 2023 - Located in the middle part of Burgenland, Austria (just on the border with Hungary), this family-run winery focuses on two things - biodynamic farming and Blaufränkisch. In addition to this commitment, they are also dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of the region. They have restored several historic buildings on their property, including an old barn that now serves as their tasting room and a 300-year-old cellar where they age their wines.
I always get excited when I see Weninger on a list, as this producer has been delivering consistently through the decade I've been exploring wine. But this vintage was a huge disappointment. A Blaufränkisch that has seen some better days. Obviously a wine that has reached its peak some years ago and started its decline way before we opened it. Though the great majority of the wine's aroma and taste profile is about the tertiary characteristics, the structure is in pure disintegration.
