Community Tasting Notes 3

November 21, 2014 - Pinot Wars: Giant Steps vs. Rippon (The Flying Winemaker, Hong Kong): 5 spice and more delicate fruit to start. Then into the dense palate with characteristic puckering acidity. A real food wine. Difficult to assess at present.

September 13, 2014 - Tasted at a bbr evening alongside a German Pinot in a Europe v New World tasting. This was better than the German but was flat on the nose and a bit overly forced on the fruit. I took few notes but recall it was either too young or too expensive!

March 14, 2014 - I've had Rippon once (2004) and I found it too candied so I rolled my eyes when I got that whiff of bubble gum on my first pour but luckily it blew off. Nice translucent ruby color more suggestive of the old world. Nice tension in the mouth between minerality, earth, smoke and herbs. But something bothered me - not sure if it was that bit of stalkiness (which reminded me of the 04 bugs) or the 14% alcohol lurking beneath (or more likely its the alc that made it taste stalky to me). In general I like the direction this winery is going and maybe some more bottle age will smooth over some of the rough edges.
