April 29, 2017 - Drank last bottle. The cork and wine were in good shape. The wine was decanted and had a fair amount of sediment. The wine was mature but with dark color and in good shape. like many of the older Andrew will wines I have enjoyed, this one has lasted longer than predicted and was quite good with the age. Although it can be difficult to part with a great wine such as this. there is probably no real benefit of be had from continuing to hold it.

February 1, 2011 - A bit nervous opening one of my last two 2002 Andrew Will Merlots and ended up very pleasantly surprised. The colors had faded yet held silky purples and reds. Unexpectedly it did not have an aged rim flavor. The fruit had held up well with aromas of blackberry, soft plumb and anise. The tannins were velvety with the finish spicy pepper lingering for a pleasant couple of minutes. Did not decant and wouldn’t think I would want to. Flavor adjusted towards black cherry after being open for the duration of dinner (sipped small tastes slowly over the duration of dinner 1.5 hr.). As expected Red Mountain’s Klipsun Vineyard produced fruit with structure and intense flavor which came through even after ten years. I will open my last bottle of 2002 A.W. merlot this year.

My friend left me two wild ducks which I immersed in chicken stock and brought to a boil. After reaching boil turned to simmer with both ducks fully immersed for 45 minutes (put a plate in stock pot to hold ducks under). Pulled duck from stock and let sit in greased (use duck fat on top of stock) baking dish to air dry for 30 minutes. Kosher salt and black pepper all over and into a 500 degree oven for 20 minutes (oven will smoke). Let rest for 15 minutes. Awesome pairing!

November 9, 2009 - dark red to purple. nose was dominated by fruit. some VA present although not as much as in bottles from the late 1990s. Something seemed unusual about the nose. Not a typical nose of merlot. In the mouth it had a good mouth feel. Surprisingly soft tannins given the age of the wine. Overall quite enjoyable but not up to what I had expected.

December 30, 2007 - Christmas dinner with Prime Rib, Ham, Duck. Opened 1 hour prior to serving. Great nose, great body and soft tannins not typically associated with merlot, but more in line with a cab. Mouth of chocolate, berries, satin finish. Had this 3 years ago and still a great wine that can go for few more years.

May 22, 2004 - Andrew Will tasting. This might be the last varietal designation under the Andrew Will label. It had just recently been bottled, so it was hard to judge. Uniquely, the nose was leathery. The palate was sweet and short. I don't think I can rate this wine.
