March 10, 2021 - Cork removed OK revealing some wine creepage up the side of the cork; standard quality cork.

Color is ruby garnet with a slight bit of amber at the rim; medium depth.

This has a delicious and savory aroma with excellent balance between fruit and mineral elements; fragrance is rather high-toned with spicy cherry and blackberry fruit supported by crushed rocks and minerals giving it sharp delineation; some spice box and a hint of beef blood also appear; this has medium complexity, but what stands out is its balance of fruit, savory notes and minerals; the aroma seems more feminine in nature, full of nuance and subtlety. Aroma = 93

Mouth feel on entry is silky with inner mouth “sweetness” – always a good sign! Medium rich fruit is, like the aroma, balanced between fruit and savory, mineral elements; flavor had medium complexity with Grenache-based sweetness and baked strawberry fruit along with more savory Syrah notes that balance blackberry, plum and spice box, white and black pepper, tree bark, followed by some gripping tannins and crushed rocks leading to a savory and mildly tannic, complex and lasting finish. This seems deliciously suited for food with its medium-bodied character and sweet tannins; it would be difficult to confuse this with a California version of either Syrah or Grenache or GSM blend; this has a lighter and much more subtle and food friendly approach, yet deliciously drinkable. This is not a “Cru” wine, and I don’t recall it being very expensive when purchased on release, but it is eminently drinkable now and provides lots of pleasure. Flavor = 93

I thought this would go great with a simple sausage dish, and the aroma DID blend seamlessly with the savory pork and fennel aromas, but the flavors were muted and dulled with the food. Hmmm … not sure why, but not a match. On the other hand, I’m finding this is pretty difficult to put down; I’m definitely enjoying it just on its own!

March 18, 2020 - Garnet with a tawny rim. Oh yeah, this is definitely old style, rustic Chateauneuf with VA and brett leading, although not at all in a bad or overpowering way. A bit thin at first too. Somehow, this all comes together to deliver a satisfying southern Rhône smorgasbord-tobacco, anise, dark red fruit, and tree bark with excellent acidity and little remaining tannin. Over time, it even develops a surprising amount of texture. Nobody would ever call this the most squeaky clean wine ever, but it is fun and full of personality.

December 31, 2019 - In a very good place. Excellent balance. Not at all overdone. Drink now and over the next handful of years.
