November 19, 2021 - Tasting in Germany during a brief COVID interlude - November/December 2021; 11/19/2021-12/2/2021 (Germany - Schwanau/Monschau): 94pts. 2004 Peter Jakob Kuhn (Drei Trauben) Östrich Doosberg Trocken is the correct name for this bottling. I confess I opened this bottle with a bit of trepidation, since most reviews here have described a wine with a real potential of oxidation/flabbiness. But no - I had a sound bottle here, although its closure is indeed unortodox and something I'd rather not see again (leave those for beer only).
This is actually an Auslese Trocken-style Riesling much in the manner of a Koehler-Ruprecht Auslese Trocken from a good vintage (which 2004 definitely was). Golden yellow, almost amber. Notes of caramel, toffee, honey, but with enough acidity to keep it fresh. I really like this style, with plenty of tertiary notes, but no discernible sweetness. Drink now if you get your hands on one of these. Great stuff! -

September 5, 2014 - Asperg Grand Growth Riesling Cup (Asperg): Peter Jakob Kühn's Oestricher Doosberg GG Riesling 2004 from Rheingau showed a slightly faint amber coloured hue. Its nose was dominated by fragrances of ripe oranges, rock sugar, obvious traces of sherry and more scents of strong oxidation. The taste was rather bitter-sweet and showed hardly any acid. The dominant palatal flavours were ripe oranges, herbs, traces of vanilla-cream and various sherry aromas. I guess crow caps (!) aren't the best way to insure a long life. Very challenging and mostly oxidized wine. Either no rating or an adventurous so la-la rating. The group rating was 83,0 points (or flaw) and one clear flaw. My rating was 84 points. I am probably an adventurous fellow.

September 5, 2014 - 2004 Riesling Großes Gewächs retrospective (Chris Home): Colour: Dark golden, amber colour.
Nose: Black tea, a bit of apple juice, pumpernickel and a bit of honey. But nearly completely oxidised.
Palate: Flat, nearly no acid, pallid. This wine is done. -

August 31, 2013 - Very unusual, drunken on for days, even on the 4th day with power and freshness, but on the aromatic side very unusual, like furniture polish, dry met (honeywine), very pure, High Level of minerality and very long. If you can take pleasure in the very unusual aromatic world of this Riesling then its a wonderful structured and balanced wine, but I can unterstand everybody who doesn't like this style, because there is no primary fruit. I like this wine, made in a way like some hundred years ago.

April 9, 2012 - Peter Jakob Kühn is a biodynamic pioneer in Germany. With the beginning of new century he reconverted the way of working in vineyards as well as in the cellar to. This Riesling is an expression of a new style - or should I say of an old style, because the wine were produced in accordance to the lunar calender and with no steel in the celar. The wine was fermented quite a long time on its skins (very unusal for a white wine).
Smells like a fresh brioche with hints of beeswax, ripe apples, green walnuts and olives. A powerful wine, medium to big body, good/ripe acidity, tastes like floury apples, toffee (no barrique) but its also fresh and tasty.
