August 20, 2019 - I would recommend 2 hours as about the appropriate time for decanting this wine. After an hour it was still very closed but after 2 it seemed to get to it's best. Initial graphite and and mineral flavours that faded as wine opened up, very long on the after taste and clearly a well made wine from a top estate in not the best of vintages. Despite the technical appreciation for this wine, it just wasn't that pleasant to drink. Tasted blind I think a 5th growth from a superior vintage would beat it hands down.

August 17, 2019 - A hour decant. So much riper and richer than I expected. In addition to plenty of black and blue fruits there was hard leather, tobacco, vanilla, and chocolate in different waves.

August 11, 2019 - Decanted about 4 hours. Wonderful over the following 2 hours with a bit more evolution and complexity emerging.

August 7, 2019 - Tasted blind, Andy’s wine, dark, thought old world, Bordeaux, elegant, still tight, the iron nose clearly comes through, rich full bodied but finesse wine

August 2, 2019 - Solid 97 for me. This one has this structure to go another 20 or so years easily. Served blind as the second of five red wines, between a 97 Phelps Insignia and a 97 Ornellaia Masseto. I guessed this was a 15 year old Napa Cabernet but I was definitely less sure about this one than the 97 Phelps. Guesses were all over the place with this one from the others. Sediment in the bottom of the glass. Had quite a bit of similar character to the 97 Phelps insignia on the nose with a hint of black cherry, blackberry, mushroom and dried herb. Yet, in the light, this had a deeper and darker crimson color with a very bright meniscus. On the palate, echoed all of the above also with a little bit of leather and pipe tobacco. Very powerful, full-bodied wine. This and the Ornellaia Masseto went the best with the New York strip loin without a doubt. Incredible wine. Cannot wait to try some slightly older vintages of this.

(Haut-Brion) This had a classic nose right out of the gates. Fresh tobacco, weedy earth, raspberry, cassis, kirsch and cigar box. Sweeter on the palate than the previous wine with more weight but a wonderfully delicate balance. After a while the oak was going back and forth on the nose but it still had that wonderful balance and weightlessness in the mouth that is one of the trademarks of Haut-Brion. Young but great.
