May 14, 2023 - Drinking well after a decade. Fruit is darker, and accompanied by gravel and mineral notes. Smooth. Garnet color.

April 6, 2023 - mature but going strong; one-hour decant and consumed over another hour and a half with dinner… became more and more expressive as the evening progressed.

initially garnet then ruby colour, fairly translucent in the glass and no sediment in the bottle. initial nose notes were of star anise, sour cherry, red currant and evergreen sap; with time the sous-bois and dusty roses came forth. medium-bodied, dry, savoury and mineral in the mouth, with notable acidity in the pomegranate and rhubarb accent to the concentrated red fruit. good depth from the very enjoyable spicy and earth notes in the mid-palate and super-soft tannins. lovely long finish with no heat (even with 14.5% AbV).

with time the wine became more vibrant; the fruit shedding any raisiny edge and showing brighter and fresher. seems another hour of aeration (or not covering the mature wine decanter) would have been better. cork was a tad soft but in perfect condition.

2011 was a cool vintage at Mt. Harlan, and with its northern exposure and highest altitude, Ryan was picked late and likely last (four passes in the middle of October, each pass vinified and aged separately). this surely helped the relatively young vines (~13y.o. at the time) achieve such complexity and age-worthiness.

January 11, 2023 - The note immediately below describes it well. In addition, we will say, although we have found other Calera vineyard designates from this era have shown, to us, a rather pronounced (and not all together welcome) coffee aspect, this bottle did not. It does show considerable agreeable earthy character, however. Quite enjoyable, meted out in smallish pours over four nights.

August 24, 2022 - Dusty blueberries, violets and roses, cinnamon, earthy mushroom finish. A bit raisiny on palate, not overtly sweet, but fruit is dried. Tannin structure is noticable, acidity is mellow. Solid
