While I did not spend a lot of time with this the nose was great and the fruit on the palate was wonderful in its cherry red profile but with great balance - it was the first bottle from this lot (which I think may have suffered from poor shipping or storage) that hit my high expectations of Mt. Eden. A-/A?

  January 18, 2024 - Sweet red cherries, elegant minerality, crushed granite, chanterelle, so delicate and velvety on the palate, long legs for a 13.5%, cola, weighty but soft, subtle hickory smoke. Truly spectacular expression of an old world style from a wonderful new world growing region.

From secondary market and yet professional seller so like the last few bottles tasted this just continues to confuse as not a bad wine, but not like a Me Eden at its best and not like other professional and CT reviews. Okay on open, but showing a bit thin. With some air it is a nice wine, but not the full (elegant) nose and finish of a really good Mt. Eden. By comparison, the 2008 and 2016, which I also bought from same source, were much more enjoyable (with the 2008 being an unusually "ripe and fat" Mt Eden and the 2016 more typical. I think I should just wait a year and see if this is just in a dumb phase.

  August 9, 2023 - A second bottle from the same lot sourced in the secondary market (but from a professional supplier). PNP and then tasted over 3 hours. The color was younger and on open the nose showed better fruit. With an hour to fully open this showed well - better than the last bottle and what I would describe as a very good pinot that was past its peak. If it were not a Mount Eden, where I know from experience that much older bottles have held up better, I would not be surprised. But this surprises me and makes me think this wine was not stored properly even if from a trade source. The good news is I have a decent stock directly from the winery, as this vintage is emotionally significant for us. The worry is that these two bottles were stored properly and the wine is in decline - I don't believe this to be the case but it worries me. Based on this bottle I would recommend drinking up even though I will hold out for the future with my bottles sourced directly from the winery. B+
