April 20, 2024 - Xiao Dong brought this bottle to Pane e Vino. It was very closed when it was in bottle but openned up after half hour decanting. It could be drank well now.

December 31, 2023 - One of the more confusing, perhaps even beguiling reds I have opened lately. 2013 as a vintage has not aged well and I expected this to be open and ready for business but it was not. Still unusually tannic for the vintage but also lean and austere. The group enjoyed this more than I did (tasted non-blind of course) and I felt that this would best be served maybe 5-10 years from now, maybe longer. Don't expect a rich modern expression, but this might be better served in a Burgundy stem down the road. By comparison I vividly remember opening a youngish 1999 Haut Brion and while tannic that wine was extremely charming and memorable while the 2013 was simply tannic and expressing the vintage for what it was. I sampled the wine multiple times throughout the night, and for now I would recommend holding....

December 14, 2023 - @ Old Homestead NYC, 30 minute decant. Interesting mix of airiness and longevity in the tannic print. Blueberry jam, pencil shavings, not very fruit-forward and rather gritty and secondary, in a good way. Definitely one of the best from this vintage.

March 5, 2023 - After a decade, this Haut Brion offers a classic claret experience with a lot of earthy Pessac character. The wine shows the slightest bricking at its edges. Decanted for one hour, bouquet offers some slight aged qualities, but mostly strawberry preserves, tobacco, iodine, and vanilla.

The palate boasts a delicious, balanced assortment of cassis, strawberries, red cherries, citrus, cigar tobacco, and pepper. It drinks a tad thin, but reminds me of great, classically-made clarets of yesteryear.

December 7, 2022 - Arizona Dreaming! (Guiseppe's in Scottsdale): No formal notes. Opened at restaurant and decanted for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours before consumption. A very nice wine considering the vintage. Any time I get to drink a First Growth Bordeaux, it is a treat! This wine showed the earthiness and gravel Haut Brion is known for with plenty of red fruit. It was a classic Haut Brion, but a little thinner than other vintages...everything was there (although more tertiary flavors would have been nicer, but still relatively young), but a slightly watered down version (if that makes sense). Still quite enjoyable and still Haut Brion! Solid 93, and may pick up a point with additional age.

Quick note to put score in perspective...98 is my highest score for red Bordeaux.
