October 11, 2011 - Mostly California Wines from the '70s at John Gilman's. (John Gilman's.): Green dominates the nose in the form of bell pepper, raw string beans and eucalyptus with a touch of sassafras and cedar. Under fruited and with acidity that sticks out too much. What fruit is there is red. There's a dusty quality to it and a bit of a tomato paste note. Not gonna win any awards. C+.

September 1, 2008 - Bought this for pure nostalgia. Expected salad dressing. And when we opened it our worst fears were realized. Funky smell and so much acidic tang we thought it was cheap balsamic. But we decanted it anyway and in an hour it was beautiful. A sensual, sexy nose of dried cherries, brandy butter and wood smoke. For some reason, it reminded everyone of Christmas. In the mouth, it drank like it looked. Ruby-hearted, all brown around the edges. Surprisingly fresh fruit, cherry and cassis, smoke and tannins that seem to resist age. This was a delicate, subtle cab. An early, unrelated chapter to the Big Cab history at Shafer.
