January 21, 2019 - Very fragrant aroma of gently toasted Indonesian spices, dusty cocoa, blue berries and lifting eucalyptus. The sweetness of the ripe fruit appears on entry of the palate with pepper and grilled fennel notes in the mid-palate. Quite a bold but somewhat raw structure, even an hour in the decanter. Finish still has some bitter tannins which extend all the way to the aftertaste. A few more years of aging may help to soften the tannins and smoothen the palate but I doubt it will gain greater complexity and depth, and the balance and poise of the better vintages.
Retasted in Jun 2019, the wine has tone down somewhat, tannins are definitely softened. The wine is more approachable now though it still requires at least an hour in the decanter for the elements to come together. To increase one point to 88. -

September 26, 2016 - Smooth, old-school style, completely-integrated, well-rounded cab drinking at peak. Should have a few more years ahead on the downslope but probably best to drink sooner rather than later. Well-made, balanced wine, great QPR.
